Greensboro man killed in Putnam County crash

A Greensboro man lost his life on Dec. 12, in a single-vehicle crash in Putnam County.

Romario Garcia Mauricio, 25, of Greensboro, was traveling alone in his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, heading southbound on Pea Ridge Road near the Sparta Highway at about 2:20 p.m. Monday, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

For reasons unknown, Mauricio’s car went off the side of the road, down an embankment, and slammed into a tree, Sills said.

Although Mauricio was wearing his seatbelt and the car’s airbags deployed upon impact, his head struck the driver’s side window with such force that it killed him, according to Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison, who ruled the cause of death blunt-force trauma.

Sills said they identified Mauricio by his fingerprints and then notified his family.

There were no witnesses to the accident, but the driver who called 911 to report the vehicle crashed into a tree told authorities there were deer on the side of the road when he went by. However, Sills said there was no evidence deer played a factor in the crash.
