Two people were arrested after a party got out of hand over the weekend.
Amaury Saradinas Reyes, 31, of Florida, was arrested around 4 a.m. July 14 and booked into Putnam County Jail on one count of aggravated assault. He was later released on a $5,000 cash bond.
Jose Marie Palafox, 21, of Eatonton, was arrested at 10:15 a.m. the same day on the same charge. Bond was also set at $5,000 for Palafox, but he was detained on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold.
Both men are victims as well as accused offenders, according to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff Russell Blenk. Reyes and three of his friends, along with Palafox and three of his friends, were invited to a party on Saturday night at a coworker’s house on Possum Point Drive.
Their versions of the story have some differences, according to Deputy Hollie Collins’ incident reports, Blenk said.
Reyes reportedly said a verbal altercation erupted when someone at the party put on a hat belonging to Palafox, prompting Palafox to demand payment for it. When he wasn’t paid, Palafox took a beer bottle and broke it over the hat wearer’s head. He then used the broken bottle to stab Reyes in the right thigh.
“So, that’s Reyes’ story, and he refused treatment for his injury,” Blenk said. Eatonton police officer Pablo Cruz helped translate the conversations.
The deputy reported that when he tried to speak with Palafox at the hospital, Palafox’s head was wrapped in gauze, with blood seeping through the bandage. Palafox was unable to speak with the deputy because he was undergoing tests and treatment.
Blenk said Palafox’s brother told the deputy that the other group that had arrived at the party with Reyes was “looking to score some drugs.”
When they were unsuccessful, they became angry and began fighting. The brother said Reyes stabbed Palafox in the shoulder with a knife, then hit him with a beer bottle. He said Palafox took the broken beer bottle and used it to stab Reyes.
