Parrotheads of all ages enjoyed an evening of food and dancing Sept. 25 as the original Jimmy Buffet tribute band A1A put on a show from the front steps of the Plaza Arts Center.

The Plaza’s lawn transformed into a tropical paradise for the event, which is the first in the “Meet Me at the Plaza” series.

FIVE YEARS AGO, OCT. 5, 2017

Complaints about distressed properties in the City of Eatonton sparked a recent discussion at city council to implement a blight tax to help curb some of the ruin. Councilmember Chuck Haley brought the item before the council Sept. 19 requesting the city to have a written procedure in place to allow officials to remove or repair properties that have been abandoned or are unsafe.

10 YEARS AGO, OCT. 4, 2012

More than two dozen certified letters from The Nuwaupian Nation were delivered Monday to law enforcement officials and others in Eatonton and the Middle Georgia area. They went to sheriff’s officers, court officials and at least one “civilian,” all of whom were involved in legal proceedings or opposition to The United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors years ago. Individuals brought Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills more than 20 of the letters, which were stamped with images of the group’s leader, Dwight Malachi York, and certified with a return address for “Embassy of: The United Nuwaupian Nation” – a new spelling for the group.

25 YEARS AGO, OCT. 9, 1997

For the next few weeks, Putnam County will be the location for yet another major motion picture. Black Dog Productions has asked for and received permission from the Putnam County Board of Commissioners to use several sections of Godfrey Highway from the Eatonton city limits to the Morgan County line to film scenes from its upcoming movie, “Black Dog.” The film stars Kevin Sorbo of the television series “Hercules.”

50 YEARS AGO, OCT. 5, 1972

The PCHS Eagles behind the 191 yards gained by Major Pennamon and the usual quick defense won over the fast Cedar Shoals Jaguars 14-7 Friday night in Athens.

Undefeated with only one score by their opponents in 16 quarters, the Eagles’ record is now 4-0 for the season.

75 YEARS AGO, OCT. 9, 1947

William W. Ramsay this week opened a radio repair shop in the annex of the Eatonton Furniture Company on Madison Street.

Mr. Ramsay, who is an authorized Philco repairman, states that he will service all makes of radios and that he will carry a complete line of tubes and parts. Formerly of Carrollton, Mr.

Ramsay comes to Eatonton from Aiken, S.C. He has been in radio work for more than 20 years. During the war, he was crew chief in radar and communications work at Warner Robins.

100 YEARS AGO, OCT. 6, 1922

Mr. L.M. Pennington bought the Hearn and Greene Hardware company stock of hardware Wednesday and has opened a hardware store at the old stand to be known as the Pennington Hardware Company. Mr. Pennington will add to the stock at once and expects to have a complete line ready for the inspection of his customers within the next few days.
