Scaffolding in front of the Pex theater came down around noon Monday after contractors completed stucco work on the facade. Although the scaffolds stood for several weeks, the stucco portion was completed on schedule with no delays aside from weather. The next order of business will be tile at the bottom of the building.

Smith Communications President and CEO A. Mark Smith Sr. announced the acquisition of The Jones County News Oct. 13, increasing the footprint of its community newspaper division.
The Jones County News has received numerous Georgia Press Association awards, including second place in General Excellence earlier this year.

As local officials wait to see what is next from the United Nuwaupian Nation, operating out of what the group calls an embassy in Atlanta, others who identify themselves as Nuwaupians are hitting the airways and social media sites to separate themselves from what they deem an extremist sect. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Monday there has been no further contact from the Nuwaupian National Embassy since more than two dozen certified letters were delivered earlier this month.

If a bank’s success can be measured in years, Farmers and Merchants Bank is celebrating 75 years of banking in Eatonton this week. “I think the secret to this bank’s success is that we’ve always had excellent employees that sincerely and genuinely care about the folks in this community,” said Joe Hudson, executive vice president and loan officer.

The Putnam County Fair is in full swing with its fine selection of rides, concessions and live exhibits on display in the fair exhibit bard. This year’s fair is being sponsored by the Eatonton-Putnam Jaycees. Headlining the exhibits are the various selections of paintings by local artists. Other exhibits come from the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Georgia Forestry and the blue ribbon winners of the recent Garden Club flower show.
75 YEARS AGO, OCT. 23, 1947
With 50 free washes going to the first 50 customers from various vicinities in the county, Ridgeway’s Cleaners will open its new self-service laundry Monday morning. Eight Launderall machines have been installed in the office space between Ridgeway’s and the old Pex Theatre. Approximately nine pounds of laundry can be washed, rinsed and spun dry in 40 minutes.
100 YEARS AGO, OCT. 20, 1922
A testimonial to Putnam’s standing as a dairy county and a distinct compliment to the owner of the particular herd was the visit last Friday of the professor of animal industry and a group of students from the A. and M. college, of Madison, to study the herd of fine Jerseys on the farm of Mr. H.T. Marshall. The students of the school who visited Mr. Marshall’s farm will enter a competitive judging contest at the Southeastern Fair in Atlanta this week.
