The Eatonton Police Department may be able to upgrade from the ol’ pen and paper to some higher tech with help from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) grant, for which the Eatonton City Council approved the action of Mayor John Reid applying.

FIVE YEARS AGO, NOV. 2, 2017

In an attempt to eliminate some of the city’s blight, the zoning and ordinance committee created a proposed blight tax ordinance Oct. 26 to present to Eatonton City Council for approval. The proposed amendment to chapter 14, Buildings and Building Regulations, of the city ordinance, states property officially designated as blighted will have its ad valorem tax increased 700 percent of what the millage rate is for that current year. If amended, the ordinance will mean taxes on a $20,000 property designated as blighted will go from $76 to $528.

25 YEARS AGO, NOV. 6, 1997

The Putnam County Middle School War Eagles became the region champs last week when they beat the Warren County Middle School 28-2 in the final game of the season. Certainly it’s enough that the War Eagles took the region championship – middle schools do not go to a state competition, so they won as many games as they could. But the way in which the War Eagles won that championship makes the victory all that more impressive.

50 YEARS AGO, NOV. 2, 1972

Putnam County Eagles nipped the balanced Greene County to a 14-0 defeat there in Eatonton Friday night. The Eagles overall record is now 8-0. Tweedy Parham for defense, and for offense the leaders were Ronnie Williams and Major Pennamon. They lead the strong Eagle attach, which meant victory for the Eagles.

75 YEARS AGO, NOV. 6, 1947 100 YEARS AGO, NOV. 3, 1922

Eatonton will soon have a free camping ground for tourists, if plans now under consideration are developed. The vacant lot adjoining the Stribling blacksmith shop is the proposed site.

Mr. Stribling is willing for the lot to be used for this purpose, and provided an arrangement can be made with the city council to furnish water and sewer connections, the square will be available to transient visitors within the near future.
