Sometimes, it's just smoke

The Putnam County Fire Department was called to Great Waters this morning when a homeowner was alerted by their smoke alarm.

Fire Chief Thomas McClain said it turned out not to be a fire after all. After firefighters arrived, they learned that Piedmont Water was conducting a smoke test on the sewer system in Great Waters. The smoke had filled the house enough to set off the alarm.

"We got there and determined there was no fire at all," McClain explained. "But we'd rather it be something like that than somebody's house burning."

Such calls are common everywhere, the chief said.

"It's not just a country thing, they've happened everywhere I've worked in the past," he added.
