Summer Inspiration hosts successful series

Beth Bacon and Kathy Smith presented a final look at Summer Inspiration to the Putnam County Board of Education, excluding board member Carol Ann Guthrie, who was not present at the meeting.

This summer, Putnam County High School hosted 112 camps, 36 extended learning opportunities, 17 specials (such as Students with Disability and English as Second Language), and credit recovery. School nutrition and administration packaged over 11,000 meals. Experiential trips included visits to Albany State, Oxford College, Davidson College, and the Trail of Tears. In addition, there were 44 learning excursions.

“These kids are not just coming to have fun but to learn life skills, receive meals, and much more,” said Bacon. “Our numbers have stayed consistent over the years, and each year, we are working harder and harder to get new kids involved.”

This year a grant total of 1,020 people were recorded participating in some aspect of Summer Inspiration. From the Head Start program through 12th grade, there is a way for students to get involved. Bacon and Smith bragged about the many departments and individuals who not only helped host camps but also helped with transportation, financing, and much more.

“We already have ideas for next year, and planning has already begun,” said Bacon.

Smith added, “It was another wonderful summer, and we’re proud to continuously improve this program over the last 10 years.”

In other matters, the board unanimously approved the current tax digest and Five-Year History of Levy, the FY25 Local Board Training Plan, and the FY25 budget.

The next board meeting will be held Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
