‘Superman’ receives retirement recognition

Deputy Fire Chief Joey Davis’s last day on the job with the Eatonton Fire Department was March 31, leading to his 23 years and nine months of service being recognized prior to a city council meeting early last month.

Davis received a plaque commemorating the occasion from Eatonton Mayor John Reid.

EFD Chief Jamey Williamson said Davis used to work at the bank across the street from the downtown fire department and earned the nickname “Superman” from his fellow volunteer firefighters for repeatedly taking his dress shirt off while running across the street to answer an alarm.

“Some of the guys even bought him a Superman t-shirt for him to wear under his work shirts,” Williamson recalled with a laugh.

The chief said that ever since he joined the department, Davis had been known to be the on-truck pump operator at fire sites.

“If Joey was operating the engine, we knew we would be in good hands. When he was supplying water, we didn’t have to worry; he would always have it under control,” Williamson said.

“Joey will always be welcome to stop and operate the engine for us,” Williamson continued. “He will be greatly missed in the department. But now he will have more time working on his golf game and doing more hunting. He deserves the break.”
