GMC plans ‘Picking Up Putnam’ project in April

Come April 15, a small army of 190 or so cadets from Georgia Military College will descend upon Putnam County to visit up to 10 of Putnam’s public or non-profit facilities. They will descend, however, from buses, not tanks, and they will be carrying not rifles, but shovels, mops and brooms.

BOC rethinks short-term rentals approach

The Putnam County Board of Commissioners (BOC) reversed direction last week on how best to get input for a possible ordinance regulating short-term vacation rental properties, mainly on Lakes Oconee and Sinclair.

Body discovered in creek; suspect in custody

Traffic on U.S. 129/Gray Highway slowed considerably as drivers crossed the bridge over Cedar Creek Sunday afternoon and noticed many blue lights flashing along the roadside and under the bridge.

Body found in Cedar Creek identified as Locust Grove business owner

A Locust Grove woman was reported missing in the wee hours of the morning Sunday. About 10 hours later, her body was discovered by a fisherman in Cedar Creek at the Jones-Putnam county line. The angler called the non-emergency number of Jones County Sheriff’s Office and reported what he saw.

Juvenile arrested for molesting child

A juvenile was recently arrested in Eatonton for molesting a child on a school bus, according to authorities. The 15-year-old’s name was not released because he is a juvenile, but he was charged with child molestation and disrupting public schools, Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell said.

Putnam’s University of Georgia county Extension Service Office will soon be moving across town into the currently vacant Jimmy Davis Park (JDP) building on Hogan Boulevard, a site of confusion and contention these past couple of years.

Fleeing beer burglars captured after hot pursuit

Two men reportedly helped themselves to 14 cases of beer and walked out of Ingles grocery store in Eatonton without stopping at the cash register. Later that day, they were captured and arrested following a dangerous chase in downtown Milledgeville. The theft happened on Feb.

AP Honor School state recognition increases for PCHS

Putnam County High School received three Advanced Placement (AP) School honors on Feb. 16, a press release from State School Superintendent Richard Woods stated. Last year, PCHS received only one AP School honor, showing the school’s advanced-placement offerings have significantly expanded.
