A “Yes” vote for SPLOST 10 on Nov. 4, is a given for me, given that last year’s attempt was not successful, mainly due to the attached bond issue and inadequate details about how the money would be used.
A “Yes” vote for the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, one cent for every dollar spent, would collect about $45 million for Putnam County over the next six years.
The majority of these dollars would be used as follows: emergency services, including Sheriff, Fire, and Ambulance/Rescue (which tops the list of priorities for Putnam Countians); Putnam General Hospital; Public Works, including roads and bridges; Building Improvements; animal control; and parks and recreation.
With their share of SPLOST dollars, the City of Eatonton plans to improve and expand its gas lines, upgrade police and fire services, improve streets, and enhance services at the senior center.
And now a reminder: the last day to register to vote is October 6. Early voting at the County Administration Building is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning October 14 and continuing through October 31.
This election is not for the single purpose of approving SPLOST 10, but also to choose a Public Service Commissioner.
The final thought for readers is this: I am a senior who has lived in a small residential subdivision on Lake Oconee for almost 40 years. It is a time in my life when my income is fixed. I would like to see SPLOST funds of $10 spent on the purposes listed for improvements in the county and the city where I vote, pay taxes, and shop.
If not approved, then rather than everyone paying a penny, some of us will be paying much, much more because of a property tax increase that will be needed to provide for just essential services.
So, please vote “Yes” on Nov. 4 for SPLOST 10.
