To the Editor,
I have been following the discussions, comments, and opinions surrounding the proposed rock quarry in Putnam County. What concerns me most is that many of the voices speaking in favor of this project do not live near the proposed site — and some do not even live in Putnam County.
For those who believe this quarry will not affect them, I urge you to reconsider. Rock quarries produce hazardous runoff that poses serious environmental and public health risks. This runoff can contain sediment, chemicals, heavy metals, and petroleum-based oils, none of which remain neatly contained.
These pollutants can enter our rivers and groundwater and ultimately flow into Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee. Because water is pumped between these two lakes for power generation, contamination in one does not stay isolated. It spreads.

Putnam County needs smart growth and responsible development — development that protects our natural resources, preserves property values, and considers long-term consequences rather than shortterm profit.
Once our waterways are polluted, there is no easy fix. The damage is long-term, impacting public health, the environment, and property values. And the people who will bear the consequences are not those passing through or living elsewhere — it will be the people who live here.
This is our home. These are our waters. Decisions of this magnitude should be made with the long-term well-being of our community in mind, not short-term gain.
