Bait and switch 70+ seniors’ school tax rates?

To the voters of Putnam County – especially seniors,

Remember passing a tax exemption for seniors on their school taxes? The county school board and tax assessor Charles Anglin have decided you really didn’t mean what the ballot said.

Let me remind you. Last election you voted to approve “… a homestead exemption from Putnam County school district ad valorem taxes for educational purposes to residents age 70 and older for the full amount of the assessed value (emphasis added) of the homestead where the assessed value is between $1 and $100,000; for 50 percent of the assessed value of the homestead where the assessed value is between $100,000.01 and $250,000; and for 25 percent of the assessed value of the homestead where the assessed value is between $250,000.01 and $500,000.”

They have now decided to base the exemption on fair market value (emphasis added) rather than assessed value! This means many of you won’t get the tax break you were expecting and are entitled to.

Submit your appeals before the July 7th deadline and ensure they comply with the law. Taxpayer Watchdog has a copy of the ballot and law posted on their Facebook page for you to use at your appeal. They are also advocating for the county tax assessor to align assessments and exemptions based on what the voters approved.

Please attend the meeting this Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at the County Administration Building, 117 Putnam Dr., Eatonton, and sign up to speak during Public Comments.

Very disappointing move in PC, Erin Olson
