Authorities are investigating the death of an Eatonton man after his body was found in his pickup truck Tuesday night.
Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said 34-year-old Nicholas Justin Dempsey was found by deputies around 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 3.
A passerby along the 100 block of Crooked Creek Drive noticed a 2015 Nissan Titan down in the woods off the roadway and called the sheriff’s office. When they arrived, deputies found Dempsey, who appeared to have died a few hours earlier, Sills said.
“It looks like he clipped a mailbox before his truck ran off down in the woods,” Sills said. “But the damage to the vehicle and the impact shouldn’t have killed him. We think he may have had a medical episode of some sort. It’s still under investigation.”
The victim's body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but Sills said he checked Thursday morning with Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison, and the results have not been released yet.
