MORGAN COUNTY
The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center (MMCC) will present a companion exhibit to its highly successful “Emergence – In Black and White” with an opening-night reception from 6-7:30 p.m., Feb. 6 at the MMCC.
The exhibit in MMCC’s Gallery 3, “Color Resonance: Gary Hudson in Full Hue,” will feature several large color works by artist Gary Hudson. It will remain available for viewing through March 27.
Hudson was an internationally acclaimed artist who died in 2009 in Madison. Known as a “lyrical abstractionist,” Hudson led a life as interesting and as compelling as his works.
He was part of the California Beat Movement, knew Andy Warhol, and met Joan Baez and Bob Dylan during his Boston years.
Hudson, unfortunately, became a paraplegic at age 20 following a vehicle accident while he was a U.S. Marine. His art career began soon after the accident. It included travel to California, France (where he resided in Cézanne’s studio), and New York, where, in 1966, he earned an MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture and later applied for admission to the honors program at age 30 years old.
Hudson’s work is now on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, among other notable institutions.
The MMMC is open to visitors Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 434 S. Main St., Madison.
