The Putnam County boys wrestling team delivered a strong showing at the traditional area tournament, qualifying five wrestlers for sectionals while competing in one of the toughest regions in the state.
Head coach Joe Hutsell said the War Eagles faced an uphill battle against powerhouse Social Circle, which dominated the tournament by placing 13 wrestlers in the finals and qualifying 14 overall.
“They are probably the second-best team in the entire state,” Hutsell said. “They dominate almost every weight class.”
Despite the challenge, Bryson Brown led Putnam County to success, pulling off one of the tournament’s biggest upsets in capturing a first-place finish. Brown defeated Social Circle’s wrestler in the 175-pound semifinals by an 11–2 decision, the only Social Circle wrestler not to reach the finals.
Brown’s championship highlighted a productive day for the War Eagles. Zachariah Long (190 lbs) earned a runner-up finish, while James Goss (126), Zyler Griffin (138), and Joe Ward (215), each placed fourth to round out Putnam County’s five sectional qualifiers.
Hutsell praised Brown’s growth within the program, noting his long-term commitment and steady development.
“Bryson has been with the program since sixth grade,” the coach pointed out. “He split time with basketball early on, but the last few years he’s been really dedicated.”
Brown qualified for the state tournament as a freshman and has continued to mature as a multi-sport athlete. This season, he earned first-team All-Region honors in football and now stands as an area champion on the mat.
“To be All-Region in multiple sports speaks to his character, work ethic, and athleticism,” Hutsell added. “It shows his passion to be great on and off the field.”
The Putnam boys will compete at the sectional tournament this Saturday at Commerce, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. Wrestlers advancing from sectionals will move on to the GHSA state tournament, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday next week at the new arena at Southlake Mall in Clayton County.
