Man hit with brick in bar brawl

An Eatonton man is behind bars facing charges related to hitting another man in the head with a brick during a bar brawl, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

Jerome Lorenzo Johnson, 43, of Custer Avenue, Eatonton, is facing charges that include aggravated assault and aggravated stalking.

Sills said Johnson and a 39-year-old Eatonton man got into a fight at a nightclub on Glenwood Springs Road around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. The business owner called 911, requesting an ambulance for the victim and reporting the fight.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center in Macon. Meanwhile, patrons inside the nightclub told deputies that Johnson was the person who hit the victim.

“We got a warrant and went looking for him, but we didn’t find him,” Sills said.

The next day, Eatonton Police Department Officer Dillon Waldroup saw Johnson at an apartment complex on Church Street and arrested him.

Sills said that a few days earlier, on Feb. 10, Johnson had been served a Family Violence Temporary Protective Order by Baldwin County authorities that ordered Johnson to stay at least 200 yards away from a woman who lived in the apartment complex where Waldroup saw Johnson.

“So, that’s what the aggravated stalking charge is,” Sills explained. “It was issued out of Baldwin County, but the violation was here in Eatonton where he did it.”

Sills said he did not have an update on the condition of the victim, who was taken to the Macon hospital from the bar fight. He also said the fight appeared to have been a spur-of-the-moment incident, and not a long-standing dispute.
