Through the first six matches of the 2026 season, the Gatewood girls soccer team has experienced a little bit of everything — big wins, tough losses, and valuable lessons against strong competition.
The Lady Gators enter the weekend with an even 3-3 record.
“We’ve got a really tough schedule,” Gatewood head coach Tracy Harper said. “We play some tough games, and we’ve got a tough road ahead of us.”
Despite the ups and downs, Gatewood has already shown flashes of its potential. One of the team’s early highlights came in a statement win over Bulloch Academy, a larger Class 4A program, which showcased the team’s grit and determination.
The Lady Gators also secured a dominant 10-0 region win over Monsignor Donovan, proving they can capitalize on opportunities.
But the season hasn’t been without adversity. Gatewood has faced difficult matchups, including a recent 6-0 road loss to Central Fellowship Christian in Macon, as well as a hard-fought 6-1 defeat against St. George’s.
For Harper, those challenges are by design.
“You’re never going to get better by playing teams you’re going to beat 10-0,” she said. “Those games are fun, but you really don’t grow from them. You only get better by the competition that you play.”
That philosophy is shaping a team that is learning to compete at a higher level — something Harper believes will pay dividends later in the season when the stakes rise.
Leading the charge for Gatewood has been sophomore striker Kathy Mendez, who has emerged as a dynamic offensive threat and the team’s leading goal scorer. Her ability to create opportunities and finish chances has made her a key piece of the Lady Gators’ attack.
In the midfield, team captain Kim Mendez has provided leadership and stability, helping to control the pace of play and connect the team from end to end.
Another standout has been goalkeeper Lauren Paxson, whose story has been one of the more unique developments this season.
A basketball player by trade, Paxson stepped into the role with no prior soccer experience after being encouraged by teammates to try out.
“This is her first year ever playing soccer,” Harper said. “She’s just willing to learn and willing to go out there and put herself on the line for the team.”
Paxson’s effort and toughness have quickly made her an important contributor.
If there’s one word Harper uses to describe her team’s identity, it’s “gritty.”
That was on full display in the win over Bulloch, when Gatewood scored with just seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime before ultimately securing the victory.
“I always say you play to the last whistle,” Harper said. “That game really showed it. We scored in the final seconds to send it to overtime.”
As the season progresses, the Lady Gators know the road won’t get any easier — especially in a region that features perennial powerhouse Westminster Christian of Watkinsville. The Lady Lions have narrowly edged Gatewood several times in recent years.
“We had to play them three times last year, and each game they beat us by one goal,” Harper said. “So we’re definitely looking for some revenge.”
While a region title remains a goal, Harper emphasized the team’s broader focus is on continued growth and postseason advancement. After winning a playoff game for the first time last season, Gatewood is aiming to take the next step.
“Our goal is to be in that state final game,” Harper said. “Each year, it’s about getting a little bit further and building on those successes.”
