Lady Lions roll past Gatewood in pivotal region match

WATKINSVILLE — Westminster Christian Academy’s Lady Lions made a statement Friday, March 27, taking control early and rolling to a 5-0 victory over the Gatewood Lady Gators in a key region matchup.

Westminster struck in the opening minutes of the first half, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

While Gatewood’s defense held strong for much of the first half, Westminster came alive after the break, scoring four more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. The Lady Lions couldn’t be stopped in the final 40 minutes. They had three different players score, with several more adding assists.

Junior Faith Lawhead led the charge for Westminster, tallying three goals and an assist. Eighth-grader Sullivan Irvine and sophomore Amelia Grubbs each added a goal, while eighth-grader Sunny Stranger set up two scores with her assists. Senior Charity Lawhead also contributed an assist, helping the Lady Lions showcase a balanced and multi-faceted attack.

Goalkeeper Sarah Kate Parham made three key saves, giving Westminster a solid defensive backbone while the offense applied constant pressure.

The Lady Lions’ disciplined approach kept Gatewood’s top offensive players, including sophomore Kathy Mendez, junior Lily Piper, and senior captain Kim Mendez, from finding rhythm in the attacking third on the pitch.

Gatewood’s backline was stout early, led by seniors Lily Huskins and Riley Justice, but Westminster’s relentless pressure broke through in the second half.

Junior goalkeeper Lauren Paxson allowed four goals after halftime, as Westminster’s speed, passing, and finishing proved too much for the Lady Gators.

Gatewood’s offense has now failed to score in three straight matches, but the Lady Gators hope that changes soon.

The defeat also marked Gatewood’s second straight loss, following a 6-0 setback against Central Fellowship Christian on March 23. The Lady Gators fell again on Monday, losing 4-0 at Trinity Christian in Dublin.

After Monday’s loss, Gatewood has a 3-5 overall record and 2-1 mark in region, hoping to rebound soon. The Lady Gators hosted Westminster again at home on Tuesday, press time.

Gatewood will be off next week for spring break, but will return to the pitch at home on April 16 against Covenant Christian.

The Lady Gators will then have four remaining games on their schedule: at Augusta Prep on April 17, at Mount de Sales on April 20, at home versus Monsignor Donovan on April 24, and at home against Central Fellowship Christian on April 27.
