The Oconee Performing Arts Society continued its remarkable season with a high-energy celebration of Motown and the Philly Sound, delivering an evening filled with familiar hits, polished showmanship, and the kind of world-class artistry that has become an OPAS hallmark.
Featuring The Augusta Symphony under the baton of Maestro Dirk Meyer, the concert showcased rich orchestrations that elevated the original versions of these beloved songs while preserving the groove, sophistication, and emotional pull that made them classics.
The evening moved effortlessly from upbeat, danceable favorites to moments of surprising dramatic depth, including a powerful performance of Ball of Confusion, a protest song rooted in the Vietnam War era and the social unrest of the early 1970s.
All three vocalists proved seasoned and well-suited to the material. Chester Gregory stood out, bringing star presence, vocal command, and a natural connection with the audience. His story about playing Berry Gordy in Broadway’s Motown: The Musical for years before performing one of the evening’s selections was a highlight, and a reminder of the caliber of guest artists OPAS consistently brings to Lake Country.
The production matched the musical excellence. With lighting and staging that felt polished and theatrical, the concert carried the look and energy of a Broadway theater or Las Vegas showroom. The mood throughout was upbeat and joyful, giving the audience every reason to clap, sway, and celebrate.
This performance also underscored the extraordinary variety of OPAS programming this season. From Broadway and symphonic concerts to intimate jazz, chamber music, holiday performances, and community events, OPAS continues to demonstrate what a cultural treasure it is for Lake Country. Just as important, the organization remains deeply committed to arts education, scholarships, and meaningful access to the performing arts for thousands of local students.
Next up for OPAS is its popular Memorial Day Weekend Concert. The season will close with a celebration of the great ladies of country music, including Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, and more. Featuring Macon Pops, Grammy-winning vocalist Nicole Zuraitis and Grammy-winning conductor Matt Catingub, the outdoor concert has become a signature event to kick off summer in Lake Country.
The concert takes place Saturday, May 23, at 8 p.m. at The Farm at Oconee. Tickets are available at 706-467-6000 or the OPAS official website.
