Summer burn ban for Putnam County in place

The Putnam County Fire Department announced a burn ban early this month for the open burning of yard and land-clearing debris.

The ban falls under the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s Rules for Air Quality Control 391-31.02-5. A mandatory annual summer burn ban in Georgia runs from May 1 to Sept. 30, prohibiting open burning of yard and land-clearing debris in 54 designated counties, primarily around Metro Atlanta, Macon, and Augusta, to maintain air quality.

Outside these dates, or in non-restricted counties, burning is permitted; however, residents must follow safety guidelines, including a 25-to-50-foot clearance from fields, forests, and structures. Fires should be at least 25 feet from woodlands, 50 feet from structures, and must have a water source nearby.

“These rules and regulations are in place to protect life and property. Please adhere to these restrictions so that we can all enjoy a safe summer in this wonderful place that we call home,” Putnam County Fire Chief Thomas McClain said.

All permissible open burning shall be conducted in compliance with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s Rules for Air Quality Control 391-3-1.02-5 “Provisions, Open Burning” and upon obtaining a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission. The Putnam County Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for enforcing the regulations found therein.

Recreational fires (campfires) for cooking or pleasure remain permitted, provided they are in a contained pit or ring, are smaller than 3x3 feet, and are not for disposing of leaves or yard debris.

While notification for burning natural vegetation is not required, residents must follow local, county-level, or city ordinances, which may be stricter than state law. Putnam County has adopted the state of Georgia's rules for outdoor burning.
