Putnam boys soccer places nine on All-Region team

The Putnam County boys soccer team was well represented in the All-Region selections, with nine players earning postseason recognition.

The honors underscore both the War Eagles’ overall competitiveness and the leadership provided by their veteran core, which helped stabilize and guide the team throughout its spring campaign.

“I am so proud of our seniors who led this team to yet another successful season,” Putnam County head coach Michael Taylor said. “Our seniors have accomplished three region championships in the past four years. They’re directly responsible for six playoff victories and 56 total wins over that span. I am grateful for their dedication and hard work over the four years with me.”

Leading the group is senior defender Dennis Sanchez, who was named Region Defensive Player of the Year for his standout play on the back line.

Dennis Sanchez also represented Putnam County on the All-Region first team, along with Jared Arreola, Angel Sanchez, and Chris Chavez. Arreola and Angel Sanchez were key contributors in the midfield and attacking phases, consistently generating scoring opportunities. Dennis anchored the defense with poise and consistency, while Chavez provided a steady presence across multiple areas of the field.

The War Eagles were also well represented on the All-Region second team, where Edwin García, Jose García, and Jared Mejia each earned honors. The trio provided important depth throughout the lineup, with both Garcías helping to control the midfield and Mejia earning recognition for his work in goal.

In addition, RJ Hines and Diego Mendez were named Honorable Mentions, highlighting the War Eagles’ depth and the contributions made beyond the starting lineup.

Putnam County finished the 2026 season with a 15-5 overall record, winning the Region 4-Class A Division I championship and entering the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The War Eagles defeated Dade County and Vidalia before falling to Barrow Arts & Sciences, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round.

“It was disappointing when we really felt like we were going to win that game and then be able to go to the semifinals,” Taylor said after the Elite Eight loss to the Blazers. “At this time of the season, they are all tough losses, especially for the seniors, because they know that was it.”

Putnam County graduated Arreola, Chavez, Hines, Angel Sanchez, Dennis Sanchez, and Diego Mendez in May, but will return a strong core led by Mejia, Edwin García, and Jose García, along with Alexander Jimenez, Jorge Lopez, and Jonathan Acostas next season.

“We have a bright future ahead of us with five returning juniors and 11 sophomores,” Taylor said. “These boys just love being together and playing soccer, and it is an absolute privilege to coach them.”
