Gerald Alvin Grimes, age 79, formerly of Milledgeville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.
Having spent most of his life in Milledgeville, Gerald was a familiar and respected presence in the community he proudly called home. After retirement, he moved to Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoyed his later years while remaining close to family and friends.
Born October 6, 1946, Gerald lived a life defined by hard work and dedication. Known to many as “The Sign Man,” he was the founder and owner of Grimes Signs, which he operated for 40 years. Through his craftsmanship and commitment to local businesses, Gerald helped shape the visual identity of countless organizations throughout Milledgeville and the surrounding area. His work could be seen across the region, and the relationships he built with customers often grew into lasting friendships.
Gerald was also an active member and leader at Lakeside Baptist Church, where he came to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ. He faithfully served as head usher and taught Sunday school for many years, sharing his faith and encouraging others through his service, leadership, and example.
Gerald’s devotion to family and quiet strength earned him the respect and love of all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend whose kindness, wisdom, and steady presence will be deeply missed.
He leaves behind the love of his life of nearly 52 years, his devoted wife, Elaine Harrison Grimes; his children, Brandon Grimes (Kelly) and Alison Grimes Foles (Justin); and his beloved grandchildren, Madelaine, Annalise, Hudson, and Landon, who dearly loved their Papa. He is also survived by his brother, David Grimes (Debbie); his sister, Rosalyn Grimes Register; and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished him. His family remained by his side, providing comfort, love, and support throughout his final days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zelma Franks Grimes and Murray Allen Grimes; three brothers, Floyd M. Grimes, Calvin O. Grimes, and Binion A. Grimes; and four sisters, Carolyn Grimes Pulliam, Barbara Ann Grimes Veal, Linda Grimes Fields, and Connie Grimes Hobbs.
Those who knew Gerald will remember his unwavering dedication to family, his generous spirit, and the love he freely gave to those around him. His life was a testament to faith, family, loyalty, and service, and his legacy will continue through the lives of those he touched.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered prayers, support, and compassion during this difficult time.
