Veta Bush Powers, 85, of Eatonton, peacefully entered her Heavenly home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family in the comfort of her home.
Born June 24, 1941, in Macon to Gladys J. Bush and Walter T. Bush Sr., Veta was proud to call Macon her hometown. She was raised there and graduated from A.L. Miller High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed the strong values of faith, family, hard work and kindness that guided her throughout her life.
She married the love of her life, Oscar M. Powers, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter and cherished memories. Though Oscar preceded her in death, theirs was a love that endured through the years and remained forever written on her heart.
A proud member of the Eatonton community, Veta dedicated herself to serving others. She faithfully served in the Pilot Club for more than 25 years and was a devoted member of Eatonton Presbyterian Church. For many years, she welcomed customers with a warm smile as the receptionist at People's Bank, where she formed countless friendships.
She also fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams by opening a craft store in downtown Eatonton, sharing her creativity with everyone who walked through its doors.
Her greatest accomplishment, however, was not found in her career or the organizations she served. It was the family she loved so fiercely and the memories she created with them. She poured her heart into those she loved, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering love, generosity, and togetherness that will live on for generations.
Creativity was woven into everything she did. Whether painting, cross-stitching, sewing, or crafting something beautiful with her hands, she found joy in creating items that brought happiness to others. She had an incredible gift for turning ordinary moments into lasting memories.
More than anything, she treasured time with her family. Some of her happiest moments were spent on family trips to the mountains, camping with her grandchildren during school breaks, relaxing on the lake, gathering around a campfire, fishing, or simply enjoying one another's company.
She loved her children, grandchildren,n and great-grandchildren beyond measure and cherished every moment they shared.
Veta lived life with remarkable strength and determination.
A four-time cancer survivor, she faced every challenge with courage and resilience, refusing to let hardship define her. Fiercely independent, wonderfully headstrong and always on the go, she rarely stayed still for long. If she wasn't headed to the mountains, she was enjoying a day on the lake, playing cards with her church friends, or taking a shopping trip.
She possessed a heart of extraordinary generosity and would gladly give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. She never met a stranger, and her warm smile and welcoming spirit left an unforgettable impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Jennifer Bridges Benefield; her son, Forrest Craig Bridges (Eyvonne); her grandchildren, Paige (Dalton) Leverette, Travis Bridges, Brandon (Kelly) Bridges and Martin Bridges; eight beloved great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life; her niece, Bonnie (Greg) von Hausch; her nephew, Bill (Tammy) Adams; and many extended family members, dear friends and others whose lives were blessed by knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oscar M. Powers; her parents, Gladys J. Bush and Walter T. Bush Sr.; her brother, Walter T. "Tommy" Bush Jr.; and her sister, Rebecca "Becky" Lowe.
Family and friends celebrated Veta's life during visitation on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home of Eatonton. A celebration of her life was held Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Eatonton Presbyterian Church, followed by a private family graveside service.
The family welcomed all who knew and loved Veta to join them in celebrating a life so beautifully lived. In keeping with her love of flowers—especially yellow roses—floral tributes may be sent to Williams Funeral Home of Eatonton.
Although our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing Veta is whole again. Her strength, unwavering faith, generous heart and endless love will continue to live on through the family she cherished and the countless lives she touched. Her legacy is found not only in the memories she leaves behind, but also in the kindness, resilience and love she so freely gave.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
