Signs of improvement for Putnam softball

The scoreboard hasn’t been kind to the Putnam County softball team through its first two games of the new season, but the War Eagles are showing signs of progress.

Putnam County opened the season with an 18-1 loss to Northside-Warner Robins Aug. 4, before returning the following day and putting together a much stronger performance, though still falling 16-8.

The War Eagles’ offense struggled to get going in the opener. Still, their bats came alive in the second game, giving Putnam County momentum and showing what the team is capable of this season.

Five errors ultimately hurt the War Eagles in the Aug. 5 loss, giving the team an area to clean up moving forward. Head coach Gabriel Dyar said the team’s response through the first two games has been one of the biggest positives.

“Yeah, we’ve come a long way in just two games,” he said. “Even though the record doesn’t reflect it yet, we’re competing at a high level and making real progress early on.”

Dyar said his team’s willingness to remain upbeat and keep competing stands out more than its 0-2 record.

“The biggest thing we’ve learned about this team is that they’ve responded well — buying in, staying disciplined, and continuing to fight for each other (until the very end),” he said.

One player who has already proven valuable with her versatility is Abigail Roberts.

Roberts can play multiple positions, contributing in the infield and outfield while also giving the War Eagles an option in the pitching circle. Her ability to fill different roles could prove valuable as Putnam County navigates the season.

There is still plenty for the War Eagles to improve, especially after committing five errors in the second game. However, the difference between the two opening performances was an encouraging sign for a team still finding its identity. And while wins are yet to come, Dyar remains confident.

“We’re excited about the direction we’re headed,” he said.

Putnam County played East Jackson in a makeup game after press time on Aug. 12. The War Eagles will travel to McDonough Aug. 17, before returning home to face Tallulah Falls School in an Aug. 22 doubleheader.
