A man driving on the wrong side of a divided highway caused a fiery head-on collision in which one person was killed and another injured Friday night.
“One person was killed and burned beyond recognition,” Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said of the two-vehicle crash between Rock Eagle 4-H Center and the Putnam-Morgan county line.
The crash happened at 9:14 p.m. on U.S. 441, which is divided by a 32-foot grass median between Putnam and Morgan.
Putnam County Firefighters extinguished the fire and assisted Putnam County Emergency Medical Services personnel in rescuing the victim of the other vehicle.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victims. Sills said they are having trouble locating next-of-kin of the deceased driver and noted that he was living in the country illegally.
