The Putnam County girls’ soccer team (8-5, 6-1) has concluded the regular season and enters the Class 2A state playoffs as the No. 2-seed from Region 4. The Lady War Eagles are now preparing to play Bacon County, the No. 3 from Region 2-AA on April 14 at 4:30 p.m.
That’s not a bad finish for a side that started the season 1-4 and gave up 13 goals while scoring only three. Since Feb. 15, Putnam County has won six of seven and has recorded five shutouts to total seven for the season.
The defensive back line of Breshyia Farley, Nevaeh Allen, Jenn McDerment and Regina Espin were instrumental in that stingy defensive effort along with keeper Tesa Shelton, who just recently signed a scholarship to play college soccer at GMC.
Oglethorpe County finished first in Region 4-AA with a sterling record of 11-2-1,
According to coach Brandi Barling, the girls may have lost those early games against tough opponents, but the adversity helped prepare them for success in region play.
Lily Frisch was the top scorer this year with 23 goals while Gracie Bird and Ana Barranco both contributed 10 each. Cambell Crouch scored 7 goals.
According to Coach Barling, 15 players contributed goals this year.
The team PCHS will face in the state tournament has been playing well as of late, too. Bacon County won four of its last five matches and finished the season strong with an 8-8 record.
