New communications specialists join EPD

The Eatonton Police Department now has two new women on its force after both received their communications officer certification June 10.

Alexa Liles and Tammi Towles met the communications officer requirements after attending a 40-hour, week-long training for Georgia Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Communications Officer Certification in Forsythe.

“I am glad to have Tammi and Alexa here, proud of how well they did in their course work and excited about them working with us,” Police Chief Howell Cardwell said, noting the certification is a requirement to be a dispatcher.

Liles, an Eatonton native, said she currently is pursuing a degree in criminal justice and will graduate the end of this semester. She made a 94 on the final exam of the POST certification course.

“My supervisor helped me,” she said of EPD Administrative Assistant Tonya Thomas. “Everybody here helped me, but Ms. Thomas was most helpful.”

Also from Eatonton, Towles said she worked the past 10 years for Georgia Department of Corrections, where she recently retired as a lieutenant.

“I enjoy law enforcement,” she said. “I wanted to come here to work after I retired because I enjoy law enforcement.”
