Last week’s high temperatures claimed the life of a pet dog and led to the owner’s arrest, according to authorities.
Eatonton Police Department officer Dennis Tippens responded to a call on the 100 block of Custer Avenue regarding a dead dog. When he arrived, no one was home at the address, but Tippens saw a medium-height male brown dog lying on the ground, according to his report.
A cable was attached to the dog’s camouflaged collar with the cable wrapped around the dog’s body and between its front two legs. The cable was attached to and wound several times around a pole in the front yard. Nearby was a doghouse that was split in two places.
“Further observation of the immediate area showed no visible food bowl, no visible water source or supply,” Tippens wrote in his report. “The outside temperature was registered as 107 degrees,” he added.
Two warrants were issued and EPD Sgt. Howard Clemons picked up the dog owner, Damion Santique Brown, 25, who was arrested around 4:15 p.m. June 16, on one count cruelty to animals, death of animal by malice; and one count cruelty to animals, maliciously failing to provide care resulting in death/ disfigurement. He was released on $14,000 property bond.
