Jones named PCHS softball coach

Softball at Putnam County High School has a new head coach.

With previous experience coaching softball as an assistant at Warner Robins High School, Mollie Jones has a true passion for the sport. However, as a teacher first, she understands the even more important value of her players’ academic success.

Jones hopes to help her Putnam County team find a balance between the sport they love and other important responsibilities by encouraging them to always give their best effort.

“Being a softball player means managing your time and working hard at everything,” Jones said. “To become a great athlete, the girls have to learn to manage their social, school, and sports life. Great softball players work hard on and off the field.”

In addition to softball, Jones has coached several sports throughout her career, including cross-country, volleyball, swimming, track, soccer, and tennis. She has also helped with numerous sports featured in the Special Olympics.

A local Georgian who received a Bachelor of Science degree in math from Georgia Southern University, Jones also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Georgia Southern University, a specialist from Piedmont University, and a doctorate from Columbus State University. She will now teach Physical Education to Putnam high schoolers.

“I am very excited about coaching softball and teaching at Putnam this year,” Jones said. “Coach McElroy and Coach Grainey have been amazing coaches. We are lucky to have them help with softball this year. My family and I know the other coaches are excited for the upcoming season.”

The PCHS softball team has two upcoming scrimmages: a July 13 scrimmage at Warner Robins and an FCSA tournament at Putnam County Recreation Department on July 19.
