Choose light over darkness

The world we live in today is full of sin and darkness. Evil is present everywhere. We turn on the television, radio or even the computer and all we hear of is senseless violence, shootings and killings.

The devil is busy thinking he can have his way. Thinking that he is in control. But we must remember that whatever happens in this world, God is still alive and well. Regardless of how bad it seems to be, how dark the world seems to have become, God has the final word.

In the gospel of John in the eighth chapter, Jesus reminds us of his power when He says, “I am the light of the world. He that follows me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.”

So, it’s important we understand that evil, which is darkness, and light, which is Jesus Christ, cannot operate in the same space. You can’t have one foot in the world and the other foot in the church.

We all are in search of something to enlighten us, that will lead us and guide us in the path of righteousness. But many of us are looking in the wrong places for answers to our problems, listening to the wrong people for advice, following the wrong crowd. However, we must be careful about who we follow and from whom we seek advice.

Just because some things are popular does not mean they are right. When we follow the wrong people, we all end up in a ditch, falling off a cliff and ending up in darkness. We must be careful in our spiritual walk and growth because our salvation is at hand.

Today is the time to be sober, time to be vigilant and aware. Because our adversary, the devil, is walking among us like a roaring lion looking for people to devour.

When Jesus was here on earth, He called His disciples one by one, and they immediately dropped everything they were doing and followed Him. We might think that following Christ was easier to do then because He was physically present; however, those men who walked with Him heard His instructions, saw His interactions with people, and they believed because they had faith and saw the light in Him.

Although we can’t see or touch Jesus physically, we can feel His spirit as he leads and guides us to walk by faith and not by sight. And when we follow Jesus, we will never go wrong. We must learn to trust Him even when we can’t see our way through or know how a situation is going to end.

We must learn to live life with purpose because God has a purpose for our lives. He created us in His image. He wants us to live a happy life. When we live in darkness, our whole outlook is gloomy; we have a negative outlook on life; we can’t see the goodness of the Lord; our mind dwells on negative thoughts.

The darkness of evil can never overcome God’s marvelous light. His light is eternal. Jesus Christ is the creator of life, and His life brings light into the world. When we follow Jesus, the true light, we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin.

When we let Christ guide our lives, we will never become lost. He is the source of the light, the light that will keep us from stumbling in a world of darkness.
