Even with much discussion over all that would need to be done to renovate and rebuild on the current Putnam County Elementary School site on Washington Street, the Putnam County Charter School System Board of Education opted to build a brand-new elementary school on land adjacent to Putnam County Middle School. At the Board of Education’s meeting on Sept. 20, the motion for a new school passed unanimously.

Community directors and advisors discussed unification of city and county governments Sept. 20 at a meeting of the Eatonton Putnam Tourism Arts Heritage Partnership.
Mayor Walter Rocker Jr. and Putnam County Board of Commissioners Chairman Dr. Steve Hersey reported to EPTAHP members that they had met with Ted Baggett, of UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, concerning the possible consolidation of the City of Eatonton and Putnam County.

Putnam County has a host of attractions that could draw tourists – and their money – to the county, state tourism officials said Monday. But to capitalize on the attractions, the county needs collaboration and partnerships. Bruce Green, leader of the group, said, “The most important voice that you all need to listen to … is the visitor.”

In a hard rain Saturday afternoon, Sept. 27, Mothers Against Crime still managed to get some 35 community members to join the third-annual Peace and Unity March. Georgia Smith, organizer of the march and head of Mothers Against Crime, said the march had been scheduled earlier in the year, but after the accident earlier in September that took the lives of five local men, the organization decided to dedicate the march to them and other young people killed.
50 YEARS AGO, SEPT. 28, 1972
The Hospital Authority of Putnam County has announced plans to construct an addition to Putnam General Hospital, which will increase the number of beds to 50, 13 semi-private rooms with two beds and 24 private onebedrooms, according to Frank Jenkins, chairman of the authority. All of that will be financed with the issuance of Hospital Authority Revenue Bonds, guaranteed by the Board of Commissioners, in the amount of $240,000.

Eatonton High’s football team scored in every quarter Friday night to smother the Gray team on its own field, 33-0. The game was the first played on Gray’s new lighted field. Second game of the season for the Eatonton squad, it was their first victory. They went down 35-0 at the hands of Monticello a week previous.
100 YEARS AGO, SEPT. 29, 1922
With something over 200 cows and heifers from Putnam County farms disposed of in Wednesday’s auction, bringing into the county nearly $4,000 in cash, the first cooperative sales of Jerseys to be put on here is declared a distinct success. While the animals sold did not bring fancy prices, except in probably three instances where registered cows changed ownership, there was evidence of satisfaction on the part of the seller and buyer alike.
