The Putnam County High School Lady Eagles basketball team recently faced a tough week of competition that resulted in three losses and dropped them to a 3-4 record on the season so far.
It started on Dec. 10, as the Putnam girls arrived for a non-region game in Madison against the Morgan County Bulldogs. They left on the wrong end of a 61-44 result, however.
Three days later the Lady Eagles were in Augusta to face the Laney Wildcats, who were anxious for a win after a 1-3 start. In-region rival Laney outscored Putnam 23-18 in the opening quarter, then poured it on in the second quarter to take a 55-29 advantage to the locker room at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats scored just two more points than the Lady Eagles and Putnam County won the final quarter 19-17, but it was too little, too late as the 90-64 final proved.
The three-game run ended on Dec. 16, with another region game for the Lady Eagles. This time they were at home against Butler for a close-fought match, but eventually dropped a 41-29 decision to the visitors.
Putnam County Lady Eagles basketball will resume play on Jan. 3, as they return to Augusta to tip off in another region game against the Westside Patriots, followed by another region game on Jan. 6, versus Washington County High School (0-2) in Sandersville. Road competition will continue on Jan. 7, as the Lady Eagles visit nearby Greene County, seeking payback for an early-season loss to the Lady Tigers.
