Letter to the editor: Thank you for raising awareness

Dear editor:

Thank you for reporting on the crucial work of Putnam County Animal Services and its dedicated staff. Many do not realize the number of animals in the county who end up abandoned and unwanted through no fault of their own.

Animal Services helps to make life better for many of them. Unfortunately, for many others, their situation does not improve.

Your article highlights the need for anyone with dogs and/or cats to have their animals spayed or neutered to avoid bringing more unwanted puppies and kittens into the world. Local shelters such as Animal Services or a local Humane Society can provide more information about this, including sources for low- or no-cost spaying/neutering, and pet adoption services.

I encourage anyone who is considering adding any animal to their family to consider the obligations of pet ownership and to decide responsibly. An animal needs food, water, warmth and shelter, just as we all do. When we adopt an animal or bring a litter of puppies or kittens into the world, we take on the responsibility of providing for those needs. Thank you for raising awareness of this important reality.
