Putnam County High School’s Lady War Eagles took a pair of region losses last week, going down 51-49 at home on Jan. 31, to Washington County, then falling 67-39 on the road on Feb. 4, at Thomson.
The setbacks extended the Lady Eagles’ current losing streak to six and left them with a 5-14 record and just two games left in the regular season.
The Putnam girls started out strong against Washington, ending the opening quarter with a 15-3 lead before the Golden Hawks turned the table with a 17-10 advantage in the second quarter.
Putnam led 25-20 at the half, but when play resumed, Washington went ahead with a 17-8 effort in the third, then held on for the win despite the Lady Eagles posting a 16-14 advantage in the final quarter to leaving them still two points short at the final buzzer.
At Thomson, the hometown Bulldogs won all but the second quarter, scoring 19 to Putnam’s 5 points in the first quarter, but falling by 3 to the Lady Eagles’ 13 in the second to make it 29-18 for Thomson at halftime.
Things went downhill for the Putnam girls from there, as Thomson outscored them 16-11 and 22-10 in the second half to reach the final 67-39 result.
Regardless, junior Kamyra Aikens was very strong in the losing effort, scoring 23 of the Lady Eagles’ 39 points, with 9 field goals made and 15 assists. She leads the team in points per game this season, averaging 15.1 per outing.
Fellow junior Azariah Brown is second in team scoring with an average of 5.3 points per game, while freshman Zy Williams is third at an average of 5.1 points per game this season.
The Lady Eagles had a so-far-winless Glen Hills team on Tuesday this week and will finish their regular season on the road Friday night against Josey High School in Augusta.
