Places Far and Near opens at MAGallery

Madison Artists Guild Gallery (MAGallery) is excited to welcome Atlanta artist Lisa Guyton to its gallery for her one-woman exhibition titled “Places Far and Near.”

Guyton is a visual artist who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and has called Atlanta home since 1995.

She holds a master of fine art in painting from American University in Washington, D.C., and credits her experience working at the Phillips Collection, a private museum in D.C. featuring post-impressionist and modernist work, as a major influence. Guyton is drawn to nature for inspiration, which is reflected in her oil paintings of landscapes and watercolor studies of flowers.

“My connection to place has been a strong presence in my work. I strive to express the essence of the subject with the least amount of fussiness,” said Guyton.

In “Places Far and Near,” Guyton seeks to communicate the unique beauty of select land- and cityscapes ranging from the western United States to western Ireland, and from Conecuh County, Ala. to Chamblee, Ga. Her connection to nature and keen observation under natural light conditions often results in realistic images that authentically capture specific atmospheres, light and colors.

Upon retirement from teaching art in 2019, at a public high school in Atlanta, Guyton began teaching drawing and painting at art centers in the Atlanta area and maintains an art studio at the Urban Art Collective in Chamblee. MAGallery is excited to include Guyton in one of its 2023 special exhibitions showcasing original artwork of emerging and established artists from outside the local community.

The reception for Guyton’s exhibition will be on Friday, May 5, from 6-8 p.m., and includes refreshments, live music, and the opportunity to visit with the artist. The exhibition will remain at MAGallery through June 3, and all works are for sale.

MAGallery is located at 125 W. Jefferson St. in Madison. Gallery hours of operation are Tues. – Sat. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For membership information or to learn more about the organization, please visit TheMadisonArtistsGuild.org.
