Georgia was on everyone’s mind Saturday night in Eatonton, as the Atlanta-based Georgia Players Guild (GPG) presented “Sounds of Georgia,” packed with nearly two hours’ worth of famous songs from the 1950s to the ‘90s by famous Peach State bands and singers.
From Little Richard to Jerry Reed to the Allman Brothers and R.E.M., the Guild musicians played them all from the front steps of The Plaza Arts Center.
More than 600 Georgia music fans had set up lawn and beach chairs throughout the park, in addition to several reserved tables with chairs up front.
GPG’s downhome tunes kept the dancing going, too, prompting a spontaneous conga line and music fans of all ages getting up to “cut the rug” throughout the evening. Coolers full of beer, wine, fried chicken and snacks prevailed, but several food trucks and drink vendors made certain no one was left hungry or parched.
The next major event at The Plaza Arts Center is coming July 6-8 and July 13-16 with “Seussical,” a Dr. Seuss-themed musical packed with stories of friendship, loyalty, family and community. Visit plazacenter.org for details.
