Putnam A’s earn rec baseball championship

Putnam County Recreation hosts numerous sports for all ages, with youth baseball among its most popular. Most recently, the 11- and 12-year-olds of the Putnam A’s were crowned local champions on May 23 under the guidance of coaches Matt Miller and Stephen Scouten.

The Putnam A’s charged through their schedule undefeated, beginning April 10 with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Putnam Padres. They followed up the next day with a 7-7 tie with the Putnam Phillies and on April 17 they brought home an 11-9 win after playing the Putnam Yankees.

On April 24, the A’s battled the Phillies again, winning 6-0 before taking on the Putnam Dodgers on April 25 and posting a 7-3 victory. On May 4, the Putnam Astros were up next, and the A’s were again victorious at 12-2.

The A’s played the Putnam Dodgers again on May 15, with the two teams posting a 5-5 tie. On May 22, it was the Yankees again, with the A’s winning 8-1.

The final game for the young team came on May 23 against the Padres, which proved to be one of their toughest games. The Putnam A’s came through with a 9-5 victory and also were awarded the championship.

Despite the short season, Coaches Miller and Scouten were constantly experimenting by moving players from position to position to find which suited each player best. To also post a consistent win streak reflects well on the coaching and the kids as they learn to fine-tune their skills.
