Crash on US 441 claims five lives this morning

A head-on collision took the lives of five Putnam County residents this morning, including an infant and toddler.

The two-vehicle crash happened at 12:45 a.m. near the Big Boys Toys business about one-and-a-half miles from the Putnam-Baldwin county line, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said.

Hailey Brook Hayes, 22, of Eatonton, was driving a 2018 Honda Civic, traveling south in the northbound lane of the highway. Sills noted she was driving on the wrong side of the road when she struck a 2005 Nissan Xterra being driven by Mayla Dostie, 44, of Eatonton.

Hayes' two children, 8-month-old Tucker Hudspeth and 3-year-old Bentley Barlow were in the car, as well as 23-year-old Zaleigh Adaya Brooks.

The vehicles were on fire and both drivers and all passengers had already perished when emergency responders arrived on the scene, Sills said.
