The Butler-Baker Alumni Project, Inc. (BBAP) hosted its Oktoberfest event this past Saturday at the historic Butler-Baker School, southeast of downtown Eatonton.
Originally opened in 1956 for African-American children during segregation, the school was integrated in 1971 for students in grades through 9 before housing the county’s Head Start preschool program until the 1990s when the building was closed.
Today, the space is being restored by BBAP, with its cafetorium and gymnasium already renovated, with three classrooms in progress. The Alumni Project aims to give new life to the old schoolhouse and bring the community together through events like Oktoberfest.
Acting BBAP Secretary Sandra Parham spoke about the pride and legacy of the organization, as well as the importance of preserving memories. She urged people to remember the history the building represents.
Similarly, BBAP President Bobby Parham described proposals for the building, suggesting it would make an excellent community center, museum, and park. He also encouraged younger generations to get involved in preserving history, pointing out that current projects will need to be passed down through generations.
B-B alumni were happy to see many smiling faces enjoying the same grounds they did in their school days.
The Oktoberfest event involved more than 30 vendors, a bounce house for the kids, a DJ playing dance hits, and several members of the local classic car club made an appearance with their rides.
The event was accompanied by wonderful fall weather as well. Food was sold from Sparrow’s Kitchen, Boss Lady Catering, Ced’s Que & Stew, and treats were sold by Linda Cakes, Bakes & More.
Several local businesses, including TKM Diva Creations, B’s Everyday Essentials, and T & A Creations, as well as the Georgia Writers Museum, which sold books written by Georgia authors for readers of all ages.
There also were unique, one-of-a-kind items for sale in multiple yard-sale style booths. Among them, BBAP Treasurer Susie Brundage presented a display of her handmade wreaths for sale.
A tour of the school building also was available to those interested in viewing the “Home of the Tigers!”
Next, BBAP is looking forward to its annual luncheon next March. Additionally, Butler-Baker hosts several other events throughout the year, such as family reunions and dances.
