HFH delivers another Putnam County home

Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Putnam County officials, board members, and guests joined together Oct. 25 to hand over the keys for the organization’s latest completed home.

“This is pretty much the highlight of what we do here at Habitat,” Putnam HFH Executive Director Murali Thirumal stated.

HFH’s mission is to put love into action in the community by providing safe, affordable housing. Applicants must have lived or worked in Putnam County for at least 12 months, prove they are financially responsible, be able to afford monthly interest-free payments, and meet other requirements such as participating in volunteer work.

Several local businesses and individuals were involved in making this house a reality for new homeowner Camille Hyman and her two-year-old daughter Carmoni Thurman, including The Ladies of Great Waters, Chris Wilson, Citizens of Georgia Power, homebuilder Clark Harper, and Farmers & Merchants Bank.

Hyman said she was very grateful for everything Habitat and its partners did to make her homeownership dream come true.

“I feel like this house will be a great foundation for my daughter as she grows up,” Hyman said.

She also said she is looking forward to bringing her family together, especially during the upcoming holiday season.

Even more exciting, Hyman’s new home is located right next door to her mother, Angela Hyman’s home. Linda Moore with Farmers & Merchants Bank was happy to be involved in the bank’s donation of the land plot.

“There is a lot that is given back to this community, and that is what makes me so proud to work for them,” Moore said.

The location of the home added to the feelings of joy and unity present during the key ceremony.

“It is a blessing to be able to work with people who want to give back to the community. It’s amazing how everyone can make an impact, one day at a time, one house at a time, one family at a time,” Habitat’s Katherine Mahlberg said.

HFH of Putnam constructs homes only within the 31024 postal code and currently needs more buildable land. Anyone interested in donating or selling buildable property within 31024 is encouraged to contact Habitat for Humanity of Putnam County at 706-991-1600.

Homeowner applications are currently closed, but HFH of Putnam hopes to open them up again in the latter half of next year. For more information, visit online at putnamcountyhabitat.org.
