In what bodes well for future varsity squads, the Gatewood Middle School football team recently completed a remarkable season, cruising to a perfect 7-0 record.
Consisting of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, the young Gators opened their season with three straight games against much larger schools that delivered convincing wins against Class 4A opponents First Presbyterian Day, George Walton, and Bethlehem Christian.
The next four wins came against traditional rivals in Piedmont (twice), Briarwood, and Brentwood. Remarkably, in seven games, they outscored their opponents 203-39 and won by an average score of 29-5.6.
The Gators were led by head coach Don Kaiser and assistant coaches Ferdinand Farley and Brian Wooten.
