Lady Gators basketball starts season with even record

The Gatewood girls’ basketball team jumped out to a 1-1 start this season after posting a 52-44 win over Edmund Burke on Nov. 14, followed by a 57-49 loss on Nov. 16 to Westminster School of Augusta.

The Lady Gators are looking to improve on their 15-12 record from last season, though they had a good start to their 2022-23 campaign.

Gatewood eventually lost seven games in a row after having gone 14-4 before its eventual losing streak.

The Lady Gators return only two seniors Carly Cannon and London Darden and one junior Sarah Mansfield, forcing a lot of pressure on the underclassmen players. Sophomores Riley Roberts, Lily Huskins, Natalie Sills, Kindall Ward, and Ellie McMillan will be among those expected to step up as leaders on this very young team.

Incoming freshmen on this year’s Lady Gators squad include Lauren Paxson, Maddie Capps, and Avery Hill. Though a freshman, Paxson has playing experience and a relationship with the older players on the team as she was on the varsity as an eighth grader just last season.

Gatewood has a home matchup with non-region opponent John Hancock Academy on Nov. 27 and will travel the next day to Westfield in Perry.
