The Gatewood boys’ basketball team had another good week, winning a pair of games over Windsor Academy and Georgia Military Prep. The Gators improved their record to 4-0 and remain among the top teams in the GIAA.
The Gators’ first victory came Dec. 7 over Windsor Academy as Gatewood beat the Knights 88-58 at home in Eatonton, followed by a 55-46 road win Saturday over the Georgia Military College Bulldogs just down the road in Milledgeville.
Against Windsor, Gatewood led 30-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Gators outrebounded the Knights by 15 and had 11 steals to Windsor’s four. The Gators also shot 52 percent on field goals and 48 percent from the arc.
Sophomore shooting guard Matt Allen had a career-high 43 points against the Knights, the most by a Gatewood basketball player since 2000, according to Gatewood head coach Don Keiser.
Junior Walker Roberts put up 14 points, senior Blake Callaway had 12 points with a team-leading 15 rebounds, and junior Kaden Keiser had 11 rebounds and eight assists on the night.
In Milledgeville, Gatewood played a girls and boys doubleheader, with the Lady Gators winning 40-8 before the boys prevailed in a much tighter match.
The opening quarter was close for the boys versus GMC, but the Gators, trailing 14-12 when it ended. An identical score for the second quarter had Gatewood down 28-24, but the Gators headed to the locker room with a little momentum after Allen drained a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer sounded.
Gatewood mounted a comeback when play resumed and led 43-39 at the end of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs were not done either, tying things up at 46 in the final quarter before the Gators tightened up and went on to post a 55-46 win.
Good defense was key in the Gators’ victory as they held GMC Prep to just 18 points in the second half. Allen put up 22 points to go along with Keiser’s 11-point game and 14 rebounds for Callaway. Junior Walker Roberts also had nine points and eight rebounds against the Bulldogs.
