Head-on collision kills one, injures others

A South Carolina person was killed and two Eatonton residents were injured in a head-on collision last week, according to authorities.

The deceased victim was identified as Kayla Marie Lewis, 37, of Abbeville, South Carolina. The other two victims who were injured and hospitalized were Gregory Austin Meyer, 31, and Deshawn Mosley, both of Eatonton, said Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 441 and Griffith Road in Putnam County.

When Deputy Mark Adams arrived on the scene, he discovered a 2013 Nissan Altima partially in the roadway and a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban overturned, Sills said.

Sills said Lewis had been traveling southbound in the Nissan while Meyer was driving northbound in the Suburban with Mosley as a passenger. At the newspaper’s press time Tuesday, Sills said it had not yet been determined which of the drivers was at fault.

Lewis had to be extricated from the Nissan and was pronounced dead at the scene, Putnam County Coroner Hollis Harrison said.

Both Meyer and Mosley were treated at the scene by Putnam County EMS personnel and taken by ambulance to Piedmont-Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens. Meyer remains hospitalized in critical condition, but Mosley has been released from the hospital, Sills said.

The crash remains under investigation by Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
