Putnam County’s five-game winning streak was snapped this Friday against No. 3 Butler in Augusta.
Junior Brayla Harris led the charge with 24 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who downed the Lady War Eagles, 57-40. Harris also grabbed nine rebounds, with three assists and two blocks in the win.
Butler is one of the team’s top-ranked teams in Class AA for a reason.
The Lady Bulldogs play stellar defense and have only given up more than 40-plus points twice this season entering this week.
Last Friday, a huge reason why Butler won by double-digits was because it limited Putnam to four points in the first quarter. The War Eagles only scored seven points in the third quarter as well.
Senior Kamrya Aikens led Putnam County with 11 points, followed by freshman Journey Waller with eight points, respectively. Eryiana Little, Jaikarrcie Smith, and Kadyn Dennis each had five points.
On Saturday, the Lady War Eagles rebounded with a 69-29 win over Jasper County. They had three players – Aikens (23 points), Waller (21 points) and Halana Griffin (13 points) – reach double digits.
Putnam County led from start to finish, easily sweeping the Lady Hurricanes in its second matchup with them of the year. The Lady War Eagles improved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in region play.
Last Tuesday, before losing to Butler, Putnam County opened up its Region 4-AA schedule against Laney. The Lady War Eagles cruised to an easy 69-50 victory over the Lady Wildcats at home.
Putnam County got revenge after losing both games to Laney last season. The Lady War Eagles dominated the glass, grabbing 42 rebounds, with 22 of them being on the offensive side of the ball.
Waller led with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Four other players – Dennis (12 points), Smith (12 points), Aikens (11 points), and A’ziyah Williams (10 points) all had double-digits.
Putnam County returned to the court with three games this week. The Lady War Eagles are taking part in the John Milledge Academy Christmas Tournament, with games against Trinity Christian on Tuesday and Brentwood Academy on Wednesday.
They’ll then travel to Sparta to play Hancock Central, which they beat 92-17 on Nov. 24, on Saturday before taking a week break.
Before ending the 2023 part of the schedule, Putnam County will play Social Circle in Eatonton on Dec. 30. The Lady War Eagles and Lady Redskins will tip off at 4 p.m.
