Seuss on the Loose celebrates its 10th year

Sponsored by Ferst Readers of Putnam County, the 10th annual Seuss on the Loose celebration is coming March 2 to Putnam County Primary School on Glenwood Springs Road in Eatonton.

Local businesses and other community organizations make possible a variety of activities, including a lollipop draw, face painting, limbo dancing, and crafts.

There will be costumed Seuss characters participating in the event, too, as they help with the Fun Run and indoor activities. Kids wearing costumes also are welcome and encouraged at Seuss on the Loose.

Bring the family for the one-mile Fun Run with registration at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. start. Fun Run prizes will be awarded in various age groups, so sign up by Feb. 16 for the Fun Run to receive an event T-shirt (while supplies last).

Registration forms are given to each child at Putnam County primary and elementary schools, Gatewood, and four county daycares, and are available at the library. There also is a registration form in the newspaper (

After the Fun Run, activities for children of all ages continue in the primary school cafeteria from 10 a.m. to noon. A $10 wristband purchase gives a child access to all the fun Seuss activities and a chance to win raffle prizes as well.

Leading up to March 2, local school children will participate in an art contest sponsored by the Eatonton Service League. Their work will be on display at the Seuss on the Loose event, as well as beforehand in several Eatonton locations, soon to be announced.

Ferst Readers uses all the proceeds from Seuss on the Loose to provide free, new, age-appropriate books each month for registered county children from birth to age 5. All children attending Putnam Primary School, Gatewood, and Putnam pre-schools and daycares are automatically enrolled. For other Putnam children, there will be a registration table at the event.

As of January 2024, there are 905 Putnam County children receiving books every month.

Children can be registered to receive books by visiting the Ferst Readers website at ferstreaders.org, and for anyone who would like to sponsor a child, donations are accepted year-round, with just $42 sponsoring one child for one year. Donations also can be made online at ferstreaders.org by selecting Putnam County GAP, or by sending a check to FERST Readers, P.O. Box 4283, Eatonton, GA 31024.

All money raised in Putnam County remains in Putnam County, and it’s a great way to start a child on the road to successful reading, learning, and life.
