It’s again time for the annual Seuss on the Loose art contest sponsored by the Eatonton Service League for grades K-5 students from Gatewood and Putnam County’s elementary and primary schools.
Each school has submitted students’ projects and artwork based on beloved characters created by Dr. Seuss, whose books have inspired millions of people worldwide for decades.
Entries could be two- or three-dimensional works and while all grade-level entries are judged together, prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each grade level, with certificates given to each young artist.
Currently, on display at the Eatonton-Putnam County Library (309 N. Madison Ave., Eatonton), the artwork will be moved to the primary school for public viewing shortly before Saturday, March 2 for the 10th annual Seuss on the Loose fundraiser event.
So, a tip of the “Cat’s Hat” to the Eatonton Service League and each of the students and teachers who make this fun-filled event happen. Make sure to visit the library to see in person the creativity and artistic talent of Putnam County’s grade-school artists.
Another popular activity during the Seuss on the Loose Celebration will be the Fun Run, sponsored by Ferst Readers of Putnam County at Putnam County Primary School (PCPS, 162 Old Glenwood Springs Rd., Eatonton), with registration opening at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. race start.
The inside fun will then begin at 10 a.m. in the PCPS school cafeteria, which will also be filled with various games and activities provided by local businesses and other community organizations, all featuring favorite Dr. Seuss characters. Additionally, a firefighter will be on hand outside to show off a firetruck and answer any questions.
Tickets per inside activity are 50 cents each or a wristband can be purchased for $10 to participate in everything at one low price.
Ferst Readers of Putnam County uses all proceeds from its annual Seuss on the Loose fundraiser to provide free, new, age-appropriate, bookstore-quality books, one each month, for each registered child from birth to age 5.
All children in Putnam daycare facilities, pre-school, and Head Start programs are automatically enrolled, but there will also be a Ferst Readers table at the event where younger or newcomer Putnam County children can be registered in the program.
Or, children can be registered by visiting online at ferstreaders.org, where donations, also are accepted year-round, with just $42 enough to sponsor one child for a full year. Alternatively, checks can be sent to Ferst Readers, P.O. Box 4283, Eatonton, Ga., 31024.
