Cuban illustrator exhibits at MAGallery in Madison

MAGallery in Madison has brought back award-winning illustrator Thomas Gonzalez for a vibrant show that celebrates springtime in the South, meaning hummingbirds, flowers, gardens, greenery, water, and lots of color.

Titled “Spring, Hummingbirds, and Flowers” Gonzalez’s exhibition features 36 watercolors in exquisite palettes and a range of subjects.

Twelve works in the show are original illustrations of hummingbirds from the soon-to-be-released picture book Behold the Hummingbird.

Each customer purchasing a hummingbird painting at the show will receive a copy of the book signed by Gonzalez.

Behold the Hummingbird joins several other acclaimed picture books illustrated by Gonzalez, including 14 Cows for America, Seven and a Half Tons of Steel, Life in a Frozen World, and Gandhi: A March to the Sea.

A native of Cuba, Gonzalez emigrated to the United States when he was 10 years old. He eventually studied art at the Atlanta School of Art (now Savannah College of Art and Design), after which he enjoyed a successful creative career that included 20 years at the Coca-Cola Company and spanned corporate communications, creative direction, package design, advertising, and picture book illustrations.

Light refreshments and conversation with the artist will be available at a reception Friday, March 22 from 6-8 p.m. at MAGallery, 125 W. Jefferson St., Madison.

The “Spring, Hummingbirds, and Flowers” exhibition runs from March 21 through April 27, and all works are for sale.

In addition to hosting rotating exhibitions of established and emerging artists, MAGallery showcases original work of local and regional artists and authors.

MAGallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The Madison Artists Guild (MAG) is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to education and the encouragement of artistic endeavors in its members and the community.
