Gators get first shutout of season over Westfield

Gatewood bounced back with a 10-0 win last Thursday in Perry, where they faced the Westfield Hornets in their second meeting of the season.

The Gators started strong with a pair of one-out base hits from Hunter and Ames Johnson. However, both were left on base after a strikeout and fly-out ended the top half of the first inning.

Wilson Moore got the start on the mound for the Gators and walked the first two batters. He recovered with a strikeout, though, followed by catcher Caleb Riser throwing out a Westfield runner at third for the second out of the inning. Moore then managed to notch his second strikeout to end the first inning.

Both teams would go scoreless in the second before Gatewood would break through with a two-out RBI double from Walker Roberts. A strikeout would end the inning. Moore would have an unbelievable third inning striking out three straight batters.

Gatewood would have another good inning in the fourth with Hunter Johnson grounding into a fielder’s choice, scoring Jayden Moss to extend the Gators’ lead to 3-0. Ames Johnson would score two runners on a single down the third base line to put the Gators up 5-0.

After another good inning from Moore, three Gators would walk to load the bases in the top of the fifth, and two runs were scored on an error as Lawson Wooten reached first. Another pair of walks would score Gatewood’s eighth run.

Ames Johnson earned his third hit of the night to score Lawson Moore and advance Lawson Wooten to third and Caleb Riser to second. Walker Roberts grounded out to first, but Wooten scored the Gators’ 10th and final run of the game.

Wooten pitched the fifth and final inning of the game striking out one batter and forcing a fly out and ground out. Wilson Moore would finish the night with four innings pitched, one hit allowed, three walks, and eight strikeouts.

Ames Johnson led the Gators at the plate reaching first four times in four at-bats, with three base hits, one walk, and two RBIs.

Gatewood began region play this Tuesday (past press time), traveling to nearby Monticello to face longtime rival Piedmont.

After hosting Vidalia Heritage at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Gators will welcome Piedmont to Eatonton on Friday at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the regular season in-region series versus the Cougars.
