The Gatewood Gators had a short but successful week last week facing region rival Brentwood in a Friday doubleheader in Sandersville.
The Gators swept the Eagles two games to none by a score of 4-3 in game one and 13-0 in game two. Pitcher Wilson Moore started game one and got out of the inning unscathed after hitting the first batter of the game.
Offensively, the Gators quickly got on base with Caleb Riser reaching on a lead-off walk and Ames Johnson reaching on an RBI single. Riser scored the first run to give the Gators a 1-0 lead in the first.
Moore had another scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts. In the top of the fourth inning, Brentwood would score their first runs of the game with the bases loaded.
Brentwood’s Will Hodges singled to left field to plate the Eagles' first two runs of the game. The Gators didn’t take much time before returning the favor to the Eagles with Walker Roberts doubling to left field and a Ben Brannen center field single scored Roberts to tie the game at 2-2.
Wilson Moore complemented his pitching with an RBI double to left field to reclaim the lead at 3-2. Brentwood again responded by putting two runners on in the fifth inning. A Gatewood error allowed an Eagles run to score to tie the game again at 3-3.
Lawson Moore came on to pitch and finished off the Eagles batters in the fifth inning. The Gators and Eagles bats went cold in the sixth and seventh innings to send the game to extra innings.
Lawson Moore would continue his dominance on the mound striking out a pair en route to a scoreless eighth inning. The Gators would again go scoreless in the eighth but Moore would again hold the Eagles hitless.
With the bases loaded for the Gators in the bottom of the ninth Lawson Moore would cap off an incredible game with a four-pitch, walk-off walk scoring Walker Roberts to end the game with a 4-3 Gators victory over Brentwood.
In game two the Gators stayed hot and extended their win streak to eight with a 13-0 shutout victory to improve to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in region. Lawson Moore had a career night in game one going 4.2 innings on the mound allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out 11 batters with zero walks.
The eighth grader also went 1-for-1 at the plate, getting a base hit and earning the game-winning walk to give the Gators the walk-off win.
Gatewood traveled to Rock Springs Christian (9-4) in Milner on Tuesday, April 12, and will travel to Stratford Academy (8-8) on Thursday.
